The Past 5 Weeks
These 12 faces including mine make up one of the Lyric Writing Master Classes put on by Song Town's Marty Dodson (Top Left).
Who is Marty Dodson? Marty is a professional songwriter based in Nashville who has had songs recorded by artists such as Carrie Underwood, Kenny Chesney, & Billy Currington to name a few. He is also the founder of Song Town which is an online platform which provides songwriters with several resources to help better their songwriting craft.
One of my goals this year is to improve my songwriting and to get better at not just writing songs for myself but for others as well. This course was focused on improving the lyrical component of songs and after 5 weeks I feel like it did just that.
I came out the other end of the course having written 4 new songs and learning a new and very valuable writing technique called Song Mapping.
Song Mapping - The songwriting equivalent of writing an outline for an essay. You write one sentence to describe what you are going to say in each section of the song and then you use that as your foundation to build the rest of the tune. It has helped me a lot by improving my efficiency and focus while writing.
Two of the songs that I wrote were written with commercial country artists in mind "I'm Good" & "I'm Not Gettin' Over You". One of the songs was written with me in mind "Half of Everything" and one of the songs was.....garbage. Haha. The great thing about writing songs is that you learn something new from every single one. Even the awful ones.
I'm feeling refreshed and excited to take what I've learned from this course and apply it to my writing from now on and hopefully, better songs will result.
Till next time,
