For me September feels a lot more like the beginning of a new year than January does so I pretend that it is. This is the time of the year when I clean off my goal board and fill it up with fresh check boxes.
My main priority this year is songwriting. I spend a considerable amount of time writing already but I'd like to spend even more time on it this year. Focusing not only on writing for myself but for other artists as well. I find that writing solely for myself limits my creativity because the songs have to fit my style and who I am. This isn't the case when writing for other artists. I get to step into their shoes, and write from their perspective and for their particular style. It's very liberating.
I'm planning to write more with other songwriters as well. In my experience, co-writing has been for the most part fruitful. Each writer brings something to the table such as an idea, a melody or lyrics and you work together to write a song. Sometimes a full song gets written. Sometimes a rough draft is written. Sometimes you don't get much written at all but in most cases you get something out of it which makes the co-write worthwhile.
I've also recently joined SongTown which is based out of Nashville and is run by two professional songwriters down there. They provide tons of great resources on the craft of songwriting and the business and I'm really looking forward to taking advantage of what they have to offer.
To top it off I am planning to make my first trip to Songwritingville, AKA Nashville this year.
Let the year of songwriting begin!
Till next time,
